FARMINGTON, Utah – Cael Mikalatos, a fourth-grade student at Lincoln Elementary, was crowned Salt Lake Slam champion last week in a Tour Of America wrestling tournament.
Cael cruised through his bracket at Intermediate 75, beating wrestlers from as far away as Kansas and Wyoming in the process. All told there were 850 elite wrestlers involved in the tournament.
The Tour Of America series holds tournaments in Las Vegas, Spokane, Castle Rock, Colo., Wisconsin Dells in addition to the recent tournament in Farmington. Last year they boasted a collection of 4,500 wrestlers at their tournaments held throughout the central and western regions of the US.
According to the Web site, wrestlers from California, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming competed in the three-day Salt Lake Slam.
Along with Mikolatos, Tommy Sawyer, Zach Blodnick and Nathan Blodick participated for the Lil’ Copperheads wrestling program.
According to Nick Mikalatos, Cael’s father, Sawyer was one win away from placing in a 36-man bracket at Novice 70 while both Blodnick brothers wrestled well but didn’t place.
